Tension within U2 over Bono's campaigns2006-01-03 13:40:48 Bono says he's worried that all his campaigning against global poverty has caused some tension within U2. He even said he's worried he may have to leave the band!
From the article: He said his campaigning activities had "raised eyebrows" among his fellow band-members. Bono, Mullen, guitarist The Edge and bassist Adam Clayton have been in the group since they first formed as Dublin schoolboys in 1977. Their front man is famed for making on-stage statements about global poverty during U2 concerts. However he said his fellow Irish rockers were "hugely supportive spiritually and financially of the work I do, but they are in a rock'n'roll band and the first job of a rock'n'roll band is not to be dull". "So we have to be very careful about just letting me go too far," he said, adding that the band's drummer, Larry Mullen, times his on-stage "rant" on poverty. "There was one point when I thought 'I'm going to be thrown out of the band for this stuff'," he said. Other news:

Nah!2006-01-20 16:46:24 Doubtless Bono's ceaseless do-gooding may get in the way of fronting a Rock'n'Roll band, but U2 have endured much worse tensions through the course of their career, not least an almost complete split over spiritual beleifs (Adam Cayton being the only non religious member of the band, felt distanced from the other three in their early years, particularly while touring for "The Unforgettable Fire") In Mick Wall's Biography of Bono, the Nobel Peace Prize Winning singer declared he and U2 were going to "Make muic untill people are sick of us." I feel this is exactly the future of the band. After surviving over a quarter of a century intact, they can certainly survive a little campaining. |
