Godsmack talks about new album Four

2006-01-17 14:13:44
When an angry metal band goes acoustic and gets positive reactions from fans and followers, the group's next album has to walk a fine line between their vicious roots and their new sound. Godsmack's Sully Erna isn't worried about it, though. In fact, he's excited about his band's new LP, Four.

"It's a killer record, and I'm really curious to see what the public's going to think of it." Erna told MTV News of his band's experimentation. "It's still Godsmack — I don't think it's lost the integrity of what Godsmack has built our career off.

"The toughness of the sound is still there. But we've expanded a little bit more. After [2003's] Faceless, we started to spread our wings a bit and re-introduce guitar solos and stuff like that."

The real test came with 2004's The Other Side, the acoustic record that opened new doors for a band used to playing for angry teenagers.

"The acoustic record was a departure and it was very well-received. It opened up a new audience for us — a lot more adults were coming to the shows, bringing their kids and having a glass of wine. That gave us a permission slip to take it to the next level."

The band wrote 35 songs for the album, recorded 17, and 11 to 13 will end up on the final product. Erna produced the album, which will be released in April, himself. The first single, "Speak," is expected to hit radio in mid-February. Other tracks expected to make the cut include "Livin' In Sin," "Shine Down" and "Voodoo Too," the sequel to "Voodoo" from the band's 1997 self-titled debut.

The band also have other projects on the go. Erna is writing a theme song for the New England Patriots (his favourite football team), while his bandmates are considering forming a side project without him to release all the tracks that were cut from Four.
